WILLIAM HAAS

Source: Covington Friend Dec 5, 1889 p 1 ... From our correspondent JH Peacemaker, we learn the following:

Sylvester Putney shot and probably fatally wounded William Haas last Saturday night. Both men live in Jacksonville. It is reported that Putney had Haas arrested for some offense but was releaded and going to a saloon Haas got drunk and went to stoning Putney's house and finally entered th eyard. Putney ordered him off the premises and after finding that he would not go away, fired two shots at him - one striking him in the bowels and the other missing. He is now in a very critical condition. It seems that Haas is a quarrelsome fellow and has the reputation of being a desparate character. He had been threatening to whip Putney who is quited an old man. Putney has been arrested and is now locked up in the Covington jail. Later - Haas died of his wounds Monday night. - kbz - thanks Sharen & Pam
